Sun Announces Two Million Solaris 10 Licenses Distributed; Includes Open Source Application Server with Solaris to Further Accel

SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. , today announced that it has distributed more than two million registered licenses for the Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System since the software became available on Jan. 31. These numbers coupled with a record number of visitors to the Sun website during the last six months highlight the incredible demand for the freely available OS. This uptake has also driven further interest in the project GlassFish(SM) open source effort -- whereby developers can participate in the open source community developing the latest version of Sun Java(TM) System Application Server PE 9.0.

"The interest in Solaris 10 is exceptional -- we've seen on average more than 11,000 registrations per day," said Tom Goguen, vice president, Operating Platforms Group, Sun Microsystems. "And by open sourcing Solaris 10 and our Java System Application Server under the Common Development and Distribution License, Sun is enabling a new wave of innovation in the industry."

Solaris 10 is available as a free download at sun.com. It includes more than 180 of the most popular free and open source software packages such as the Sun Java(TM) Desktop System, GNU utilities and Perl and Python programming languages and the Sun Java(TM) System Directory Server, a powerful LDAP directory server and the Sun Java System Application Server, an open source Java(TM) EE certified application server based on Sun's GlassFish project.

Solaris 10 also ships with a copy of the Sun Java(TM) Enterprise System. This integrated suite of infrastructure software solutions is freely available to developers and can be deployed on any number of systems for $140/employee/year. This revolutionary new business model can significantly reduce procurement costs and simplify the deployment of enterprise software.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully ...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
