Safari Books Online Enhances Functionality and Usability of On-Demand Digital Library

Safari® Books Online (www.safaribooksonline.com), the leading on-demand digital library for technology, digital media, and business professionals, announced today the launch of Safari Books Online 6.0. This release features ground breaking advancements in the product offering, including exciting new functionality such as an interactive reading experience; dynamic content categorization; innovative community and collaboration features; and enhanced search functionality.

“With these new features, our users are now able to search for and categorize topics of interest more quickly, while expanding their knowledge base by networking with experts in their field and collaborating with colleagues,” said Jeff Patterson, CEO of Safari Books Online. “The enhancements in 6.0 result in a powerful, user-friendly library that delivers not only training material, but also the resources our customers need to more effectively learn from and use the information we provide.”

Safari Books Online 6.0 features include:

  • Search Optimization – Improved search functionality makes it easy to find all content in the digital library, including text, video and curriculum guides. A new interface also enables users to read the content while keeping the list of search results in view.
  • Advanced Search - Enhanced advanced search query capability enables the building of search rules through a simple dialogue box.
  • Collaboration - Shared folders, search results, and notes allow workgroup users to network with other users about topics of interest, recommend content, and discover additional titles favored by experts in the field. In addition, the “review this book” feature allows subscribers to comment on a book or write a complete review. All “review this book” entries are public and can be seen by all site visitors, with or without a subscription.
  • Expanded Ratings – This version offers both an Amazon rating and Safari Books Online user-generated ratings on books and videos in the digital library in order to ensure users are finding the best materials available from trustworthy sources.
  • Personalization – Users can now create personal folders and save search preferences to categorize material in the digital library, enabling them to find and store titles of interest more quickly. Users can create and attach notes to a book or a page, highlight text and attach notes to that text, and print notes and highlights in a custom summary.
  • Enhanced Readability – This feature gives users the ability to make inline notes in the text they are reading, dog ear or bookmark specific pages, and share these notes with other team members.
  • Mobility – Safari Books Online’s mobile-friendly website ensures that subscribers can read books wherever they are. And now PDFs downloaded from Safari Books Online are optimized for mobile devices, computers and other reading devices.

Thad McIlroy, Digital Publishing Analyst for The Future of Publishing, www.thefutureofpublishing.com, responds favorably to the new Safari Books Online, release 6.0. McIlroy says, “Safari Books Online 6.0 is the best e-reading experience I've yet encountered, and I think beats the competition hands-down. There's so much more to creating a valuable and immersive experience for the online reader than just imitating paper with pixels. Safari Books Online, from my perspective a long-time pioneer and leader, has just left the competition behind in the dust.”

Safari Books Online 6.0 is now available.

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
