SeniorNet Extends 25th Anniversary Success into 2012

SeniorNet celebrated its 25th Anniversary in May of 2011 and now in 2012 has even more success to celebrate. The non-profit saw a nine percent growth rate in members and volume for 2011 and received a total of more than $1.275 million of in-kind donations to help seniors and underserved communities access the Internet.

With more than 60 Learning Centers, six of which are located on American Indian Reservations, SeniorNet relies on the generous support of sponsors like AT&T, IBM, Verizon, Microsoft, Adobe and US Department of the Interior Office of Indian Energy and Economic Development (IEED), to provide the tools that have allowed more than a million people to learn new skills and explore the digital world. A growing network of motivated and skilled volunteers share time and wisdom to guide students to their on-line goals.

2012 Initiatives

Earlier this year, SeniorNet added three initiatives that have been particularly popular. SeniorNet recently launched a social media blog http://seniornet.org/blog/ to help familiarize users with social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. SeniorNet also partnered with Winster an on-line gaming site for seniors and boomers designed to encourage social interaction, collaboration and mental stimulation through puzzles and card games. Also this year, SeniorNet entered into a partnership with Milestone Broadcast Corporation. In 1998 Milestone created Good News Planet to broadcast to the world, life affirming, thought provoking Good News, with a focus on seniors, technology, health, science, travel and entertainment from leaders in these industries. Information from Good News Planet is now available through the SeniorNet website.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with our progress after a quarter Century,” said Leslie M. Smith, SeniorNet board chairman and IBM Business Development Executive. “With the continued support of our sponsors, partners and volunteers we have been able to bridge the technology gap in many areas, helping seniors and the underserved enjoy fulfilling, rewarding lives.”

Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addr...

To Really Work for Enterprises, MultiCloud Adoption Requires Far Better and Inclusive Cloud Monitoring and Cost Management … But How?
