The Cambrian explosion of API’s is underway. Not the API’s in the consumer IT world, although the exponential growth of Public API’s from companies like Facebook and Twitter have been nothing short of amazing. The explosion of API’s that’s happening within large Fortune 100 companies is equally impressive, though harder to quantify. It’s not a recent thing. The embrace of Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) was really the initial catalyst that kick started their love affair with web services. However, what was once a niche within certain business units of an enterprise has quickly become a must-have across the entire enterprise. HTTP(S) has become the lingua franca of integrations both within and across borderless enterprises. SOAP-based web services with XML payload is making way for REST-based API’s with JSON payload. API management platforms are staking claim as the enterprise API edge, whether on-premise or in the public cloud. API security standards like OAuth 2.0 are becoming mission critical in securely exposing sensitive company assets via APIs to support the myriad types of consumption models. The Cisco Services organization began its journey of API Externalization in mid-to-late 2009. Our goal was simple: To allow our partners to access Cisco data in a simple, secure and scalable way.
