Revenues for Augmented Reality in Consumer Electronics Industry to Approach $600 billion by 2016, Forecasts Semico Research

Augmented Reality (AR) is a disruptive technology that is going to influence almost every aspect of our technological life. It is still in its infancy and is often looked upon as gimmicky or promotional, but it is going to drive innovation within the gaming, medical, mobile, automotive and manufacturing markets. Semico’s latest report, Augmented Reality: Envision a More Intelligent World, provides an in-depth look into this technology and its impact on the market. Semico forecasts that revenues related to this technology will approach $600 billion by 2016.

“We’re at a time when technology is accelerating so quickly it’s hard to keep up,” said Michell Prunty, Consumer Analyst, Semico. “QR codes, NFC codes, AR tags - every day there is something new. But augmented reality isn’t just a new fad that will only impact marketing firms. It’s a new way to see and interact with technology that everyone should be aware of. There is going to be an increased need for new software platforms, video and audio processors, NAND and mobile DRAM. If you’re developing for the consumer or automotive industries, you must be involved with this market early on.”

Key research findings include:

  • Revenue from tablet PCs was $30.7 million in 2011
  • Over 864 million high-end cell phones will be AR enabled in 2014
  • DTV is a mature market and therefore will have mostly stagnant growth throughout the forecast
  • By 2020 103 million automobiles will contain AR technology

Semico’s report, Augmented Reality: Envision a More Intelligent World, examines the vendors, markets and issues surrounding augmented reality technology. This report seeks to provide an overview and analysis of the many ways augmented reality can take advantage of current technology, and how augmented reality will force those markets to innovate to fit within the demands of natural user interfaces, privacy and user-generated content.

Forecasts through 2016 are provided for:

  • Hardware
  • End-use market growth by segments
  • Unit growth and revenue
  • Automotive (2020)
