Quand les DSI innovants sont dans les « nuages »...

 

Red Eye flightNew York, 14 novembre 2012 : les traces du passage de l’ouragan Sandy ont disparu quand je prends à 6 h du matin un taxi à JFK, fraichement débarqué du « Red Eyes Special », surnom donné par les Américains aux vols de nuit entre San Francisco et New York.

Le « Cloud Business Summit », organisé par Saugatuck, que j’avais annoncé il y a quelques semaines, démarre à 8 h, car le programme est très dense.

 

Les participants

CBS general viewPlus d’une centaine de DSI de grandes et très grandes organisations sont présents. 

City, Amex, News Corp... la grande majorité d’entre eux sont américains, mais j’ai quand même rencontré quelques entreprises européennes telles que SGS venant de Suisse, même si son DSI, Ed Beesley, est... américain ! Il n’y avait aucun français cette année...

J’ai eu de nombreux échanges avec eux et tous, sans exception, avaient déjà déployé des solutions sur Cloud publics.

On a aussi beaucoup parlé de Sandy, l’ouragan qui avait fait beaucoup de dégâts dans la région et dans les centres de calculs qui y sont très nombreux. Une seule personne avait annulé sa participation à cette conférence pour cause de difficultés à redémarrer son informatique...

L’un des responsables de la banque CITI m’a montré sur son smartphone des photos et des vidéos du centre de back-up qu’ils avaient mis en œuvre ; le plus impressionnant : 4 moteurs à réaction d’avion, en façade du bâtiment, étaient utilisés pour fournir l’énergie nécessaire, en lieu et place des traditionnels moteurs diesel.

 

Les keynotes

CBS Bill 3Bill McNee, bien connu des lecteurs de ce blog pour ses fréquents passages à Paris, a ouvert les débats. L’essentiel de son exposé a tourné autour de sa nouvelle approche des changements induits par le Cloud, la mobilité, les solutions de communication/collaboration et le big data, qu’il a nommé « The Boundary-free Entreprise » que je traduirais par « l’entreprise sans frontières ».

Vous retrouverez dans sa présentation beaucoup de chiffres très détaillés sur les tendances à moyen terme du Cloud Computing.

CBS - BIll keynoteJ’ai repris ce schéma que j’aime beaucoup, car il montre qu’en 2016 seulement 13 % des entreprises utiliseront uniquement un Cloud privé pour leurs nouvelles applications.

On y voit aussi que les Asiatiques (47 %) et les Européens (41 %) seront plus nombreux que les Américains (34 %) à choisir en priorité des solutions Clouds publics !

CBS - IBM keynoteIBM, sponsor « platinum » de l’événement, a présenté sa vision smartcloud autour du double concept de « repenser l’informatique » et « réinventer le business » avec le Cloud Computing.

J’en ai extrait cette double statistique :

  • Entre 2012 et 2015, le pourcentage des entreprises qui auront déployé de manière « significative » des solutions Cloud passera de 13 % à 41 %, un triplement en trois ans.
  • Le Chiffre d’Affaires de l’industrie du Cloud va être multiplié par 6 entre 2011 et 2020.

PWC (nouveau nom de CBS - PWC keynote 2PriceWaterhouseCoopers), autre sponsor platinum de la conférence, a comme IBM, beaucoup insisté sur les changements « métiers » induits par le Cloud Computing.

L’un des messages clefs de cette intervention : il est indispensable de simplifier, de faire disparaître la complexité des SI actuels si l’on veut favoriser l’innovation.

Table ronde : gestion des risques et des bénéfices

CBS Roundtable 4Il y avait de nombreuses tables rondes avec des intervenants de haut niveau et il est difficile de toutes les résumer ici. 

Dans cette table ronde, les dirigeants de News Corps, du Washington Post et de Pitney Bowes ont mis en évidence les innovations rendues possibles par le Cloud Computing.

Si je devais en retenir une seule idée : les changements sont plus profonds que prévu, mais mettent plus de temps que prévu à se matérialiser.

Avant la table ronde à laquelle je participais sur le thème des risques et des bénéfices, IBM avait expliqué que :

  • En 2011, les entreprises considéraient encore que risques > bénéfices.
  • En 2012, l’équation c’est inversée : bénéfices > risques.

Ce n’est pas moi qui vais dire le contraire !

Les autres intervenants étaient :

  • Ed Beesley, CIO de SGS, la grande société suisse dont le métier principal est... la sécurité.
  • Gary Lynch, Directeur Général de Marsh, dont le métier principal est l’assurance des risques majeurs !
  • Irving Wladawsky-Berger, Consultant pour la banque CITI après une longue carrière chez IBM.

Ce que j’en retiens : à l’inverse de certains discours « sécuritaires extrémistes » que l’on entend trop souvent en France, nous étions tous raisonnablement d’accord pour dire que les entreprises doivent aller le plus vite possible dans ces directions, mais en appuyant sur le frein chaque fois que les risques apparaissaient trop grands ou sans méthodes efficaces pour les contrôler.

Irving et moi avons mis l’accent sur les avantages concurrentiels et les bénéfices majeurs que peuvent en tirer les pays en émergence, moins freinés que les pays développés par des solutions informatiques existantes très rigides. Ces dimensions internationales sont trop souvent absentes des conférences auxquelles je participe aux USA, car mes amis américains ont souvent une vision très « US centric » du monde !

Je rentre toujours plus optimiste après avoir participé à ces conférences de haut niveau, car j’y rencontre des dirigeants et DSI de grandes entreprises innovantes, qui ont compris les potentiels des nouvelles technologies comme le Cloud Computing.

J’espère qu’en 2013 de nombreux responsables européens et français participeront au Cloud Business Summit 2013 !
