OMG to Manage the Industrial Internet Consortium

The Object Management Group® (OMG®) today announced that it has been named to manage the day-to-day operations of the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) by the IIC Founding members. The IIC is an open membership, not-for-profit group that will take the lead in establishing interoperability across industrial environments for a more connected world.

Founded by AT&T, Cisco, General Electric, Intel and IBM, the Industrial Internet Consortium will develop critical relationships with leaders in technology, manufacturing, academia and the government on working committees.

“From our middleware and modeling standards such as the Data Distribution Service, SysML, and UML, to our standardization efforts in vertical markets including manufacturing, healthcare, and transportation, OMG has a strong history of spearheading technological developments that have – and will continue to – accelerate the Industrial Internet,” said Dr. Richard Soley, Chairman and CEO of OMG and Executive Director of the IIC. “By applying our 25 years of experience in running a successful technology standards consortium to managing the IIC, OMG is excited to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the world’s leading technology innovators at the precipice of the largest explosive growth to the Internet since the mid-‘90s.”

OMG members MITRE, PrismTech, Real-Time Innovations, and Vanderbilt University have already became members of the new consortium, joining a growing list of industry innovators who will be shaping the enabling technologies of the Industrial Internet. While the IIC is not a standards organization, it does coordinate the development of common architectures and platforms in order to reduce duplication of standardization efforts.

“OMG is the recognized leader in managing and growing open membership technology groups,” said Dr. Joseph Salvo, Technology Lab Director, GE Global Research. “Collectively, the five founding members of the Industrial Internet Consortium have worked with OMG for more than 50 years. And we have a high degree of confidence in our ability as a consortium to help charter new territory by advancing the integration of the digital and physical worlds.”

The IIC is open to any business, organization or entity with an interest in accelerating the Industrial Internet. For more information, visit www.iiconsortium.org or send an email to info@iiconsortium.org.

Quotes from OMG-IIC Members

“The Industrial Internet is essential to the safety, security, and prosperity of our nation and the world,” said Mark Maybury, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, MITRE. “As a company chartered to work solely in the public interest, MITRE welcomes the opportunity to join this consortium and be a part of its activities to strengthen and advance efforts in support of this critically important area.”

“Our congratulations to the OMG on being selected as the program management office for the IIC,” said Keith Steele, CEO, PrismTech. “We believe that through working together the IIC membership and the OMG can make the Industrial Internet a reality and thus help deliver the potential economic benefits worldwide. PrismTech will play a fully supportive role, both in the IIC and as the provider of a key enabling technology for Industrial Internet systems, our Vortex intelligent data-sharing platform.”

“The IIC will accelerate the delivery of the cost saving, health, safety and reliability benefits of the Industrial Internet,” said Stan Schneider, CEO from Real-Time Innovations (RTI), “We are excited to join the IIC to contribute expertise gained from hundreds of real-world deployments of our Connext DDS communications platform. RTI looks forward to working with the IIC to usher in the next industrial revolution.”

“As a longtime member of OMG, Vanderbilt has witnessed first-hand the ability of OMG staff to broker some of the world’s most popular standards over the years,” said Janos Sztipanovits, Director, E. Bronson Ingram Distinguished Professor of Engineering and Institute for Software Integrated Systems (ISIS), Vanderbilt University. “We are looking forward to continuing our relationship with them on both the OMG and IIC sides, as well as the many great Industrial Internet and cyber-physical systems efforts that will result from this exciting new venture.”

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014, the Object Management Group® (OMG®) is an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium. OMG Task Forces develop enterprise integration standards for a wide range of technologies and an even wider range of industries. OMG’s modeling standards enable powerful visual design, execution and maintenance of software and other processes. Visit www.omg.org for more information.
