Sony Ericsson and IBM Deliver New Secure Mobile Enterprise Solutions

Sony Ericsson and IBM Deliver New Secure Mobile Enterprise Solutions

(October 21, 2003) - IBM and Sony Ericsson have started deliveries of secure mobile end-to-end solutions to the enterprise market. With this solution, enterprises will be able to extend business information to mobile workers to improve efficiency and productivity.

Sony Ericsson today introduced its new P900 smartphone, which together with IBM software can provide enterprises flexible, easy to use, and secure mobile end-to-end solutions. The new solution combines IBM’s delivery capability and Sony Ericsson's P800 and P900 smartphones. Users gain fast, easy-to-use and secure mobile access to e-mail, corporate intranets and other applications while corporate IT-departments benefit from a system that is flexible, verified, fully secure and easy to manage.

"Mobile workers using Sony Ericsson smartphones running IBM WebSphere middleware can look forward to enjoying flexible, secure and simple access to key business information from virtually anywhere at anytime," said Jonathan Prial, VP, sales and marketing, IBM Pervasive Computing Division. Targeting the mobile workforce of medium to large companies, the solution utilizes the new version of IBM WebSphere Everyplace Access, middleware that provides mobile professionals constant wireless access to a wide range of enterprise data as well as personal productivity applications and Lotus Instant Messaging. Protecting an enterprise’s sensitive data, WebSphere Everyplace Connection Manager (WECM) creates a mobile Virtual Private Network, (VPN) for both Internet Protocol (IP) networks and non-IP or private packet radio networks that encrypts data, optimizes performance and reduces transmission costs.

IBM and Sony Ericsson are working together to help enterprises increase the business usage of advanced mobile handsets and increase productivity in mobile work environments, such as field and sales force applications.

The Sony Ericsson P800 integrates a phone, full PDA-functionality, Internet access, camera, video and music player, and communications features in one device, running on the open operating system, Symbian OS. The P900 incorporates a number of vital upgrades, such as a 65K color screen, increased internal memory, and video camera capability. It will be on the market during Q4 2003.
