Elastra, the start-up with the push-button software for configuring, deploying and managing application on Amazon’s cloud, can now support Apache Tomcat 5.5, its first application/web server, adding web apps and java servlets to its portfolio.
It already supports MySQL, like Tomcat all open source stuff, and plans to start supporting commercial databases, web servers and application servers by the end of the next quarter when it can handle the license checking.
Long about that time it should add VMware virtualization aside its current Xen capabilities.
Next summer it plans to add enterprise app servers and by fall be ready to do packaged apps, ESBs and BPMs. It competes against 3Tera, but thinks 3Tera is really competing against VMware.
It says it can elastically scale sophisticated application systems up and down based on computing needs and handle failover and replication.
Now with its 1.1 Cloud Server rev it provides pre-configured clustered Apache Tomcat architecture designs and access to native Tomcat administration tools. It’s also enhanced its browser-based user interface.
With the economy in chaos it’s hoping to appeal as a cost savings.
Elastra’s focusing initially on Amazon because it’s got Amazon money in its kitty along with investments from Hummer Winblatt and Bay Partners, some $14.75 million altogether.
