IBM Releases Open Source Cloudscape Database. Beta Version Now Available.
Digg This!
Cloudscape, IBM's Java-only database will be the core application around which IBM is creating an open-source Java database. Code-named Derby, it is due to be released into the Apache Software Foundation. A beta version is available now from IBM. IBM's decision signals a greater commitment on behalf of the company to open-source projects. This is not the first time a product has been retooled and made available. By releasing Derby, IBM will increase interest in the product and make developers more familiar with its application. Cloudscape is platform-independent and runs on any Java Virtual Machine. IBM has been using Cloudscape, which it acquired in its 2001 purchase of Informix, as part of its Workplace desktop application line. The relational database fills a niche market, and has very small market share in comparison to DB2. Only DB2 compatible syntax may be used. However, users can select from three package types; Java, Linux, and Windows native installer are all available. Download and configuration instructions can be found at IBM's Web site.
