WebSphere Journal Exclusive Interview: What's Happening in WebSphere
Last month, Jack Martin, editor-in-chief of WebSphere Journal, and Tom Inman, vice president of product management and marketing, IBM WebSphere Software, talked about the differences between WebSphere and WebLogic. This month, they look at what's happening in WebSphere now and in the future - and review briefly the open-source competition, such as would-be alternatives like JBoss and Apache Geronimo.

JBoss is actually a couple of things. First, it is a federation of pure open source projects. Second, we are a company that provides the Professional Open Source business model. That means we provide 24X7 support to make sure our customers are up and running. We are the key developers behind the federation of projects - like JBoss App Server, Hibernate, Tomcat, JBoss Cache, JBoss Nukes, etc. This allows us to drive innovation as well as things like J2EE Certification via our employees - and ensures we have the experts to fix any problems that customers have with the software.

Professional Open Souce also means we build out a partner program. Companies like CA, HP, Novell and Unisys now provide support and implementation services for JBoss products in cooperation with JBoss, Inc. So, in fact we are providing global, robust set of services to our customers.

And our customers do use us in mission critical applications like running telephone networks, operating lights-out semiconductor fabrication processes, etc.

Hopefully that clears up Tom''s comments on JBoss.
